Disk Diet For Machine

Maybe I should rephrase the title. Put on your Mac. That’s better. For most of us, storage on a Mac become problematic over time. We add photos, videos, music, books, applications, and files; lots of files. All those add up to rob our Macs of already nominal storage space. Way back in the day, back when spinning hard disk drives were the rule, we Mac users often archived files, compressed files, pruned files to prevent the Mac’s disk from filling up.

Then along came gargantuan disk drives so large and so cheap we never needed to throw away any files so we didn’t. Then along came SSDs, those screaming fast flash storage devices which are expensive and small so now we’re back to pruning files to save space. Here’s a quick way to reclaim some space without adding an extra disk drive to your Mac. It’s call, a Mac utility which has been around a few years, gets rave reviews and five star reviews, and deservedly so.

It’s like having a diet for your Mac’s storage. Disk Diet digs into Mac files you may not need and frees up a lot of storage; I’m talking about gigabytes of storage the first time you use it. Run the app and take a look at the space you reclaim. Not only does Disk Diet reclaim space from app logs, system logs and various cache files, it also monitors Mail downloads, Trash, Downloads, and gets rid of those files, too. The big storage savings come from unexpected places such as all those extra language packs that Apple stuffs into OS X, all of which take up valuable storage, but few of which you will ever, ever use. They’re gone.

Ditto for iPhoto photo deletions, old iOS updates, and developer files which may no longer be needed. Disk Diet scans your Mac’s files, displays a list of what it thinks can be deleted safely (and gives an option to view everything first), and the whole mess can be cleaned out with a click to the Diet button. I saved almost 20-gigabytes alone on just iPhone and iPad files and applications.

Disk Diet doesn’t cost much and you probably won’t use it every day or every week, but it’s far less expensive than buying and installing a new SSD or disk drive on your Mac or Mac notebook.
